Nel febbraio del 1992 alla cerimonia annuale dei Brit Awards, Brian May e Roger Taylor, annunciarono il desiderio di organizzare un grande evento per rendere omaggio alla vita ed alla carriera del frontman dei Queen, scomparso il 24 novembre del 1991 in seguito a una broncopolmonite aggravata a causa dell’Aids.

Qualche mese dopo la morte di Freddie Mercury  i restanti componenti dei Queen vollero omaggiare il loro leader con il Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, i cui incassi sono stati usati per dare vita alla Mercury Phoenix Trust, associazione che si occupa proprio nella lotta contro questa malattia.Il Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert fu un concerto memorabile: quel lungo sogno musicale,con i più grandi artisti internazionali si riunirono sul palco del Wembley Stadium di Londra e il live fu trasmesso in mondovisione  dal primo pomeriggio fino a tarda sera.e a guardarlo furono oltre un miliardo di persone, oltre ai 72 mila spettatori che poterono parteciparvi. I tagliandi andarono esauriti in sole due ore,nonostante ancora non fosse stato diffusa la minima informazione su chi avrebbe suonato oltre ai componenti restanti della band.

Brian May :

“Good evening Wembley and the world! We are here tonight to celebrate the life and work and dreams of one Freddie Mercury! We are gonna give him the biggest send-off in history! ” (“Buonasera Wembley e  mondo!  Gli daremo il più grande tributo della storia! Roger Taylor:

” Hey today it’s for Freddie, it’s for you, it’s to tell everybody around the world that Aids affects us all…that’s what these red ribbons are all about…and cry as much as you like…John’s got something to tell you” ( “Hey oggi è per Freddie, è per voi, è per ricordare a tutti nel mondo che l’AIDS ci coinvolge tutti…questo il significato di questi nastri rossi…e piangete pure quanto volete! John ha qualcosa da dirvi!”)

John Deacon :

” First of all, Brian Roger and myself would like to thank all the artists who are performing here today in London, and they are giving their time and energy to make this tribute to Freddie a reality to happen today. First of all, the show must go on and we’ll start with an American band three times Grammy Award winners, please welcome Metallica! ( “Innanzitutto, Brian Roger e io vorremmo ringraziare tutti gli artisti che si esibiranno oggi a Londra, che stanno dando tempo ed energia per rendere questo tributo a Freddie la realtà che è oggi. Innanzitutto, lo spettacolo deve continuare, e iniziamo con una band americana vincitrice di 3 Grammy Award, diamo il benvenuto ai Metallica!”)

Sono passati 24 anni dal più grande tributo della storia della musica rock: The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert For Aids Awareness. Mai così tante star della musica mondiale si sono riuniti per celebrare la vita, la carriera e la musica di un solo artista: Freddie Mercury.

 

 

  • The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness was a concert held on Easter Monday, 20 April 1992 at Wembley Stadium in London, England for an audience of 72,000, and broadcast live on television and radio to 76 countries around the world, with an audience of up to one billion. The profits from the concert were used to launch The Mercury Phoenix Trust, an AIDS charity organisation. In February 1992, at the annual BRIT Awards ceremony, May and Taylor announced plans for the concert. When tickets finally went on sale, all 72,000 tickets sold out in just three hours, even though no performers were announced apart from remaining members of Queen.
    The concert opened with a message from the three remaining members of Queen in tribute to Mercury. The music then commenced with short sets from bands that were influenced by the music of Queen, including Metallica, Extreme (playing a Queen medley), Def Leppard (who brought Brian May onstage for a version of “Now I’m Here”), and Guns N’ Roses. Between bands, several video clips honouring Freddie Mercury were shown while roadies changed the stage for the following act’s performance.
    The second half of the concert featured the three remaining Queen members – John Deacon (on bass), Brian May (on guitar) and Roger Taylor (on drums) – along with guest singers and guitarists, including Elton John, Roger Daltrey (of The Who), Tony Iommi (of Black Sabbath), David Bowie, Mick Ronson (of Spiders from Mars), James Hetfield (of Metallica), George Michael, Seal, Paul Young, Annie Lennox, Lisa Stansfield, Robert Plant (of Led Zeppelin), Joe Elliott and Phil Collen (of Def Leppard), Axl Rose and Slash (of Guns N’ Roses), Liza Minnelli, and others. Via satellite from Tacoma, Washington, U2 dedicated a live performance of “Until the End of the World” to Mercury.
