“It was the most exciting day of my life…”

-Could you tell us where you live and your birth year?

I live in a town called Godalming, Surrey in the UK. My birth year 1943.

-How long have you been following Queen?

Since 1975.

-When have you seen them live for the first time? And where exactly?

The first time Live was in September 1976 – their FREE concert in Hyde Park, London.

-Please describe us how you managed to get to the show, and what were your feelings that day and your excitement as Freddie entered the stage. Tell us something about that wonderful day.

I went with a friend on the London Underground train to Hyde Park Corner station as early as possible an we arrived in the Park at around 9 a.m. so were able to get to the front near the stage. It was a beautiful day, sun shining and warm. The show didn’t start until around 2 or 3 o’clock and there were a lot of other acts first – in fact Queen didn’t come on until about 8 p.m. but of course with the lighting and all the ‘special effects, dry ice etc. it was spectacular!! The crowds were enormous from early on in the afternoon and before the other acts came on we were entertained by the music of Pink Floyd booming out on the speakers and drifting into the warm air and sunshine. We were also entertained by some people dressing up in robes and strange clothes, but everyone very friendly. There was tremendous excitement as the time for Queen to come on arrived with clouds of dry ice emerging from the stage and Freddie burst on in his white leotard, looking amazing with his long black wild hair, silver jewelry and black nail polish. ( During the 70s we all wore black nail polish to concerts and Brian’s fans wore white!) Their performance was incredible, so exciting and as ever, vocally, they were just as we heard them on records. It was the most exciting day of my life at that time! This was also the start of making friendships that would last a lifetime.

I don’t think there is much more to add about the concert, except that there were also costume changes which were spectacular, but it was my first experience of seeing Queen LIVE and it was very special. Unfortunately, there was no chance to meet them on this occasion but in the following months and years we were able to do so – once backstage at Wembley in 1981 I think and also at Heathrow Airport where we were able to get photos and also talk to Freddie. We were so surprised that he was a little shy and spoke so softly – so very different to his on-stage personna! At that time Freddie also signed a painting I had done of him and I have had their signatures a few times! I have quite a few photographs which I can share but will share with you on here if you would like. I can also go through my photo albums and see what I can find. I have yet to upload a lot of my photo gallery from my old laptop which I haven’t done as yet, but will do so it might take a little while. Just let me know if you would like me to post some photos on here, it might take some time but I can do it.

These pictures are in a room in my house where I keep all my memories through the years and Queen features strongly! I am sorry for the reflections as the photos are behind glass. I have also included the painting I have done of Freddie which I mentioned. He signed it at the top left-hand corner but it can’t be seen properly as it has faded a bit. I didn’t know if you would also like to see some of Brian, but one was taken in 1978 with him at Heathrow Airport and the other one taken in 2012 at an event which Brian organized called “Wildlife Rocks” to support his charity for wildlife. This was held just 10 minutes from my home in the grounds of a cathedral where Brian performed inside the cathedral with Kerry Ellis. I hope you like them.

 

I don’t have a picture of me with Freddie unfortunately, although I have spoken with him, but one of my very good friends had her photo with him at Heathrow. The photo of my dear friend back in 1978 getting a picture signed by Freddie at Heathrow Airport, London.

Ci puoi dire dove vivi e in che anno sei nata?

Vivo in una cittadina chiamata Godalming, nel Surrey, Inghilterra. Sono nata nel 1943.

Da quanto segui i Queen?

Dal 1975.

Quando li hai visti live per la prima volta? E dove, esattamente?

La prima volta che li ho visti live fu nel settembre del 1976 – al concerto gratuito di Hyde Park, Londra.

Descrivici per favore come sei riuscita ad arrivare allo spettacolo, quali sono stati i tuoi sentimenti quel giorno e la tua emozione quando Freddie è salito sul palco. Raccontaci qualcosa di quella meravigliosa giornata.

Con un’amica sono arrivata in metropolitana fino alla stazione di Hyde Park Corner, ed abbiamo raggiunto il parco verso le 9.00 del mattino, e siamo riuscite ad arrivare in prima fila, sotto il palco. È stata una bella giornata, il sole era caldo e splendeva sopra di noi. Lo spettacolo non iniziò prima delle 2 o 3 del pomeriggio e prima si esibironotanti altri artisti – infatti i Queen entrarono in scena dopo le 8 di sera, ma con le luci e tutti gli effetti speciali, come ilghiaccio secco ecc., è stato spettacolare!! La folla era impressionante fin dal primo pomeriggio e, prima che arrivassero gli altri artisti, fummo intrattenuti con la musicadei Pink Floyd che esplodeva dagli altoparlanti e si diffondeva nell’aria calda e nella luce del sole. Siamo stati intrattenuti anche da persone con strani vestiti, ma erano comunque tutti molto amichevoli. Ci fu un’enorme eccitazione quando arrivò il momento per i Queen di salire sul palco in una nuvola di ghiaccio secco, e Freddieapparve nella sua tutina bianca, ed era fantastico con i suoi lunghi capelli neri, i gioielli d’argento e lo smalto nero. (Durante gli anni ‘70 portavamo tutti lo smalto nero ai concerti, mentre i fan di Brian lo portavano bianco!) La loro esibizione fu incredibile, così emozionante e, come sempre, a livello vocale, erano proprio come li ascoltavi nei dischi. È stato il giorno più eccitante della mia vita fino a quel momento! E fu anche l’inizio di amicizie che sarebbero durate tutta una vita.

Non penso che ci sia molto altro da aggiungere per quanto riguarda il concerto, tranne che ci sono stati dei cambi di costume spettacolari, ma è stata la mia prima esperienza LIVE con i Queen e fu speciale. Sfortunatamente, non c’è stata alcuna possibilità di incontrarli in questa occasione, ma nei mesi e negli anni a seguire ci siamo riusciti – una volta nel backstage di Wembley nel 1981, penso, e anche all’aeroporto di Heathrow, dove siamo riusciti a scattare delle foto e anche a parlare con Freddie. Siamo rimasti sorpresi nello scoprire quanto fosse timido e che tono di voce pacato avesse – decisamente diverso dal suo personaggio sul palco! Quella volta, Freddie ha anche autografato un dipinto che lo ritraeva e che avevo fatto io, e ho anche avuto i loro autografi diverse volte! Ho parecchie fotografie che posso condividere con te qui se lo desideri. Posso anche passare in rassegna i miei album fotografici e vedere cosa riesco a trovare. Devo ancora caricare la mia galleria fotografica dal vecchio portatile, cosa che non ho ancora fatto, ma lo farò sicuramente anche se potrebbe richiedere un po’ di tempo. Fammi sapere se vuoi che io posti delle foto qui, potrebbe volerci del tempo, ma posso farlo.

Queste fotografie si trovano in una stanza della mia casa dove conservo tutti i ricordi accumulati negli anni e i Queen occupano il posto d’onore! Mi dispiace per i riflessi, ma le foto sono incorniciate e quindi dietro un vetro. Ti allego anche la foto del dipinto che ho fatto di Freddie e di cui tiho parlato. L’ha autografato nell’angolo in alto a sinistra ma non si vede più tanto bene perché si è un po’ sbiadito. Non sapevo se ti sarebbe piaciuto vedere anche un po’ di foto di Brian, ad esempio una è stata scattata nel 1978all’aeroporto di Heathrow e l’altra nel 2012 ad un evento organizzato da Brian chiamato “Wildlife Rocks” per sostenere il suo ente benefico a favore della fauna selvatica. Questo evento si è tenuto a soli 10 minuti da casa mia, nel parco di una cattedrale dove Brian si è esibito all’interno della cattedrale stessa con Kerry Ellis. Spero vi piacciano.

Sfortunatamente non ho una foto con Freddie, anche se ho parlato con lui, ma una delle mie migliori amiche ha una foto con lui a Heathrow. Una foto che ritrae la mia amica, nel 1978, mentre si fa autografare una foto da Freddieall’aeroporto di Heathrow, a Londra.
